When Should I Start Planning My Wedding? Key Dates to Remember

by Wiringiye Moses

Planning a wedding can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. I’ve been through the process myself, and let me tell you, it’s quite the rollercoaster ride! But fear not, future brides and grooms – I’m here to share my insights and help you navigate this exciting journey.

When Should I Start Planning My Wedding?: A Timeline Overview

When Should I Start Planning My Wedding

To start planning your wedding, it’s recommended to begin about 12 to 18 months in advance. This timeline allows for flexibility and thorough preparation, including booking venues and vendors. If you prefer a shorter engagement, you can plan within 6 months, but be aware that popular venues may be booked

But before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let’s take a bird’s-eye view of the wedding planning timeline. Every couple’s journey is unique, but here’s a general guideline to keep in mind:

  • 12+ months before: Get engaged, set a budget, choose a date
  • 9-11 months before: Book major vendors, start dress shopping
  • 6-8 months before: Send save-the-dates, plan honeymoon
  • 4-5 months before: Finalize guest list, order invitations
  • 2-3 months before: Have final dress fitting, confirm details with vendors
  • 1 month before: Get marriage license, have final venue walk-through
  • Week of: Relax and enjoy!

Now, let’s break this down and explore each stage in more detail.

The Engagement Period: Laying the Foundation

The moment that ring slips on your finger, the countdown begins. But don’t panic! This is the time to savor the joy of your engagement and start dreaming big. Here’s what I did during this phase:

  1. Announce the engagement: I couldn’t wait to share the news with family and friends. We threw a small engagement party – nothing fancy, just a cozy gathering with our nearest and dearest.
  2. Set a budget: This was crucial. We sat down and had an honest conversation about our finances. It wasn’t the most romantic part of wedding planning, but it set the tone for all our future decisions.
  3. Choose a date: We considered factors like weather, venue availability, and family schedules. Pro tip: be flexible if you can. We saved a bundle by choosing a Friday instead of a Saturday!
  4. Create a guest list: This was trickier than we expected. We started with a “dream list” and then whittled it down based on our budget and venue capacity.
  5. Choose a wedding style: Rustic barn wedding? Elegant ballroom affair? Beachside bash? We browsed through countless Pinterest boards and wedding magazines for inspiration.

“The engagement period is like the overture to an opera – it sets the tone for everything that follows.” – Emily Post

9-11 Months Before: The Big Decisions

This is when the real planning kicks into high gear. I found myself juggling multiple tasks during this period:

  1. Book major vendors: This includes the venue, photographer, videographer, and caterer. These folks get booked up fast, especially for popular dates.
  2. Start dress shopping: I began my search early, giving myself plenty of time for alterations. Remember, some designers need 6-8 months to create a custom gown!
  3. Choose wedding party: We asked our closest friends and family to stand by our side on the big day.
  4. Begin registry: We started our registry early, giving guests plenty of options for engagement gifts and early wedding presents.

Here’s a breakdown of how we allocated our budget for major vendors:

Vendor Percentage of Budget
Venue 30%
Catering 25%
Photography/Videography 15%
Attire 10%
Music 10%
Flowers 5%
Miscellaneous 5%

6-8 Months Before: The Details Emerge

At this stage, our wedding started to take shape. Here’s what we focused on:

  1. Send save-the-dates: We wanted to give our guests plenty of notice, especially those who’d be traveling.
  2. Plan honeymoon: This was a welcome break from wedding planning! We researched destinations, compared prices, and eventually booked our dream getaway.
  3. Choose wedding attire: I had my first dress fitting, and we started looking at suits for the groom and groomsmen.
  4. Book rehearsal dinner: We scouted locations and made reservations for this important pre-wedding event.
  5. Hire officiant: We met with several potential officiants before finding the perfect fit for our ceremony.

During this period, I found it helpful to create a wedding planning binder. It kept all our contracts, inspiration, and to-do lists in one place. Here’s how I organized mine:

  • Budget tracker
  • Vendor contact info
  • Inspiration photos
  • Timeline checklist
  • Guest list
  • Seating chart ideas

4-5 Months Before: Refining the Vision

With the big elements in place, we turned our attention to the finer details:

  1. Finalize guest list: We made our final cuts (not easy!) and prepared to send invitations.
  2. Order invitations: We chose a design that reflected our wedding style and ordered enough for our guest list, plus extras.
  3. Plan ceremony: We met with our officiant to discuss the structure of our ceremony, including readings and music.
  4. Book transportation: We arranged for a limo for the wedding party and shuttle buses for guests.
  5. Start writing vows: This was both exciting and nerve-wracking. We decided to write our own vows, giving ourselves plenty of time to perfect them.

One aspect that surprised me during this phase was how many little decisions needed to be made. From napkin colors to cocktail hour music, the details seemed endless.

To avoid getting overwhelmed, we set aside specific “wedding planning” times each week, rather than trying to tackle everything at once.

2-3 Months Before: The Home Stretch

The big day was getting closer, and our excitement was building! Here’s what we focused on:

  1. Have final dress fitting: I brought my maid of honor along for moral support (and to learn how to bustle my dress!).
  2. Confirm details with vendors: We touched base with all our vendors to ensure everyone was on the same page.
  3. Create seating chart: This was like solving a complex puzzle, but we managed to seat everyone harmoniously.
  4. Purchase wedding bands: We chose rings that complemented my engagement ring and fit our personal styles.
  5. Finalize menu: After a delicious tasting session, we selected our wedding day menu.

During this time, I found it helpful to delegate tasks to willing family members and friends. My maid of honor took charge of organizing the bridal shower, while my mom handled some of the DIY decorations. Remember, you don’t have to do everything yourself!

1 Month Before: The Final Countdown

With just weeks to go, we tied up loose ends:

  1. Get marriage license: We made a date of it, grabbing lunch after picking up our license at the county clerk’s office.
  2. Have final venue walk-through: We met with our coordinator to go over every detail of the big day.
  3. Break in wedding shoes: I wore mine around the house to avoid blisters on the big day.
  4. Finalize vows: We put the finishing touches on our personalized promises to each other.
  5. Confirm honeymoon details: We double-checked reservations and packed our bags.

At this point, I started a daily meditation practice to help manage pre-wedding jitters. Just five minutes a day made a big difference in my stress levels!

Week of the Wedding: Deep Breaths and Smiles

The big day was almost here! Our focus shifted from planning to celebrating:

  1. Attend rehearsal and dinner: We practiced the ceremony and thanked our wedding party.
  2. Delegate day-of tasks: We assigned small jobs to trusted friends and family.
  3. Get beauty treatments: I had my final hair trim and mani-pedi.
  4. Pack for honeymoon: We made sure our passports were ready and our suitcases were packed.
  5. Enjoy time with loved ones: We made a point to relax and spend quality time with family and friends who had traveled for our wedding.

The Big Day: Cherish Every Moment

After months of planning, our wedding day arrived in a whirlwind of joy, tears, and laughter. Here are some tips I wish I’d known:

  • Eat breakfast: It’s easy to forget in all the excitement, but you’ll need the energy.
  • Take moments alone: Steal a few private minutes with your new spouse to soak it all in.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff: If something goes wrong (and something probably will), remember that it’s about your love, not perfection.

Post-Wedding: The Adventure Continues

Even after the last dance, there were still a few tasks to tackle:

  1. Send thank-you notes: We aimed to get these out within three months of the wedding.
  2. Preserve wedding dress: I had my gown professionally cleaned and preserved.
  3. Change name (if desired): I updated my ID, bank accounts, and other important documents.
  4. Order wedding album: We chose our favorite photos and created a beautiful keepsake.

Lessons Learned: Wisdom for Future Brides and Grooms

Looking back on our wedding planning journey, here are some key takeaways:

  1. Start early, but don’t rush: Beginning the planning process 12-18 months out gave us time to make thoughtful decisions without feeling rushed.
  2. Be flexible: Some of our favorite wedding moments were unplanned or last-minute changes.
  3. Prioritize what matters: We focused our budget on the elements that were most important to us (great food and photography) and saved on areas that mattered less.
  4. Communicate openly: Regular check-ins with my partner kept us on the same page and reduced stress.
  5. Take breaks: We made sure to have “no wedding talk” dates to keep our relationship front and center.
  6. Trust your vendors: Once we’d chosen professionals we trusted, we let them do their jobs without micromanaging.
  7. Remember the ‘why’: Whenever planning got stressful, we reminded ourselves that the most important thing was our commitment to each other.

Final Thoughts: Your Wedding, Your Way

Every couple’s wedding planning journey is unique. While timelines and checklists are helpful, the most important thing is to create a celebration that feels true to you as a couple.

Whether you’re planning an intimate backyard gathering or a grand ballroom affair, let your love story be the guiding force.

As you embark on this exciting adventure, remember to enjoy the process. Yes, there will be stressful moments, but there will also be joy, laughter, and precious memories in the making.

From one newlywed to future brides and grooms, I wish you all the happiness in the world as you plan your special day.

Now, take a deep breath, grab your partner’s hand, and let the planning begin. Your happily ever after awaits!

Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates. I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your new updates.
